This week’s podcast show guests were Jonathan Goolsby and Josh Henning from Goolsby Customs in Bessemer, Alabama. This interview was pretty unique in that it was done while they were driving to a Good Guys show, passing a cell phone back and forth to answer questions (a first for us all, I’m sure)!
I’ve known about them for quite a while, first seeing Josh with their award winning ’67 Chevelle build featured on TV from the 2009 SEMA show! I actually met them in 2010 on the Hot Rod Power Tour (their Chevelle passed my Chevelle…..quickly), and I’ve been following them ever since.
They’ve continued to crank out sensational work, rack up awards, and despite what the economic news says have been able to grow their shop in the process. Not too shabby, right?
During the interview we discussed a couple of their famous builds in detail, specifically the ’67 Chevelle and the ’71 “Pegasus” Mustang that they built for a loyal customer, Buddy Shores. Both cars ride on Roadster Shop chassis, and both are award winners….but that’s where the similarities end.
The Chevelle is big block powered and has a bazillion little touches to keep the looks clean (tucked bumpers, custom engine bay shrouding, custom interior, etc.). It also won the coveted ‘Best GM Resto-Mod’ award from GM at the 2011 SEMA show!
The Mustang is a little more radical in that it started as a ’71 Mustang Mach 1….but is now lower, shorter, and is powered by one of the first EVER 5.0 Coyote motors! It too is an award winning, garnering the Builders Choice Award at the 2011 Good Guys Columbus show.
Their shop is also building a promotional ’69 Camaro convertible for Lokar, and it too will feature a Roadster Shop chassis and tons of custom features – especially several new Lokar components (like electronic actuated door handles like you’d find on a new Corvette).
I asked the guys what the secret to their success was, and they were honest in saying that this business is a marathon, not a race.
The most important key to getting noticed is to first build a sensational car that showcases your talents to the fullest, and then get it seen by the masses (go to as many shows as possible, talk to people, etc.).
It may take 2 days to get the next big job or 2 years, but the key is to keep at it. Today their shop has grown to several employees and the future looks bright!
Thanks for the interview, Jonathan and Josh!
