FEATURE INTERVIEW

This week’s podcast show guest is my pal Adam Moore, the man in charge of selling all of the performance parts goodies at Karl’s Performance Parts, the GMPP division of Karl Chevrolet in Ankeny, IA. I had the chance to go down and visit Karl’s in person a couple of years back, and it’s a place that I’m still impressed by. Carl Moyer founded the dealership back in the late 1970’s, and he’s grown it into something very special. A racer at heart, he’s kind of the Iowa version of Rick Hendrick in that he thinks big, loves to race, and goes for the gold every time.

Just as they were back then, Adam and the crew still put a major emphasis on selling GM Performance Parts to enthusiasts and racers, but over the past couple of years it really seems to have amped up. They now sell all sorts of performance items in addition to the GM stuff (including MSD, Lingenfelter, and other cool stuff), take pride in their affordable prices (selling items just barely over invoice), and they support a few circle track series in a fairly major way, including some even as the title sponsor! In addition, Karl Chevrolet is now a Callaway Camaro and Corvette dealer, and for an Iowa kid….that’s just plain cool to see.

Adam also spoke about the increase in sales and production of Karl’s Custom Corvette’s. This division of the business has focused on creating ’63 and ’67 Corvette style bodies for new Corvette’s, and they are now sold all over the country. The process of creating the cars is really pretty slick as the bodies are made locally, and the new Vette’s come right off of the dealer truck for conversion.

My personal favorite is the Z06 conversion because I really dig the fender flares. By the way, Rick Hendrick himself owns a Karl’s Custom Corvette!

Long time listeners will remember that Adam was on the show briefly once last year, and that he too is a Chevelle owner. His personal car is a ’66 that he recently got running after a long “rest.” He was able to acquire a returned “sealed” race motor for his car (a side benefit of his position supporting race teams), and future plans are to stuff that into his ’66 for a little tire burning wholesome fun. Adam will be the first to say that his car needs a lot of TLC and that (at this point) his family needs come first….but I’ll be he’ll find a way to do both.

You can reach Adam directly at adamm@karlperformanceparts.com. Thanks for the interview, Adam!
