Movie Review: Days of Thunder! The team that brought you Top Gun, brings you Top Car – better known as Days of Thunder. Both movies feature a wildly talented but undisciplined rebel who is as awesome with driving machinery as he is with the ladies. Both feature a helmet-less motorcycle riding Tom Cruise as the lead who goes through massive success riding his own ego….until his butt can’t cash them when he gets hurt – in one case just mentally, and in the other physically. Both leave him scared to re-engage at the thing he does best…until he basically resolves it in about 20 seconds by realizing….he’d damn well better or his friends were going to die in one case, and in the other they’d just be super bummed they lost the race…and move on with life. Whatever.
Both feature a wise father figure Tom Cruise at first rejects the authority of, then later craves the leadership and approval from. Both have Val Kilmer as Iceman playing the uber talented and more successful nemesis turned friend….except in Days of Thunder it’s Michael Rooker playing Rowdy Burns, both have an amazing failure on the first try to woo the leading lady, and both have a dead goose scene…except in days of thunder it was just a bird run over by a rental car. This is the most perfect racing movie of all however, and even today still is adored by fans – and NASCAR drivers – including the current reigning NASCAR Cup Series Champion who goes by the name of Rowdy Busch…and runs number 51 on his own race cars outside of the Cup Series. This is the movie that proves to get the girls, you gotta go fast, and if you’re from California you’re not really a yankee…you’re not really from anywhere.

Movie Review: This is it! If you have been waiting months or years for us to finally review this movie, your days of suffering are now over. Here it is in all it’s glory. This may be the perfect movie for a show like ours to actually review because, #1 – it’s dumb, #2 – it’s funny, #3 – it has great cars, and #4 – this movie is told, in audio story form, from a radio station, with everyone glued to their audio listening device. This was a time when real stars were on the radio….which we’re just going to claim as old-school form of a podcast. It may also be (in a way) the redneck cousin sequel to our favorite movie Tommy Boy as well (listen in for details).

TMCP #458: Tom Rightler, the Chevelle Doctor: Performing Top Notch OEM Restorations!
This week I spoke to Tom Rightler, founder of Mid Atlantic Muscle Cars in Bridgeton, NJ. Tom is know for his excellence in restoring most muscle cars, but specifically Chevelle’s. Tom’s dad was a mechanic for thirty years so he grew up around cars and wrenching on them for fun. Like a lot of us, cars were his escape and relaxation! He walked into his first job in a family owned office supply business, learned the trade, and stayed there for years as his hobby turned into a very successful “side hustle.” Detail and accuracy became his trademark and over the course of a decade he became a well known name in the Chevelle restoration world. He even went to night school…just to learn body work, welding, and painting!

Pop Culture: Chuck Yeager has died. Listen in for a tribute to a pilot from another era that loved duty above all else. An A-1, all American, total bad ass!
Dukes Review: This episode is AWESOME! It has everything: Duke genealogy, aerial stunts, maps of Hazzard, a strange bad guy (lady) that is rich, successful, driven, and so cool she has a huge gap in her front teeth. The plot revolves are strip mining Hazzard for coal deposits and a helicopter fighting the General Lee! It’s great, so great in fact that when they wrote the 2005 Dukes of Hazzard movie they just took the plot from this episode and added a race to it. Really. It’s awesome. 10 Corndogs.

This week our guest was Blake Foster, President of SpeedTech Performance USA. Speedtech is known for many things, but as of late I’ve noticed a LOT of their product in the field, at SEMA, and at the track. The common denominator: BIG front tires are included in the suspension packaging, even on cars where there is often no practical way to do so (such as an A-Body GM car like a Chevelle or GTO). Blake’s mottos is, “why make great suspension just to run a 245 tire?” With that said…I needed to know more!

This week is a special guest I met at SEMA but did not get to talk to until he agreed to be on the show. David Rey is well known from the show Graveyard Cars but in 2018 he realized he was not cut out for the world of reality TV. It was only after he quit the show that his wife said he should just start restoring Mopars in his own shop. When he rattles of the list of the cars that are in line for work, it would make most resto shops shudder. Even with all of the jobs, David is a one man show handing the bulk of the work himself!
