Feature Segment

Marc Meadors is the President of the GoodGuys Rod & Custom Association, and he was born into hot rodding. In 1983 the term “car show” was changed forever as it was that year that his dad Gary Meadors founded the The Goodguys Rod & Custom Association. Gary was a lifelong hot rodder, and the yellow Ford that is now known internationally as the symbol of Good Guys was (and still is) his personal ride. He started his first show out in California, but then one show led to two, two led to four, and now today there are over 20 events annually all across the country. The shows themselves are generally massive 2 to 3 days in length, feature more vendors than the SEMA show, and bring classics, hot rods, and muscle cars out by the droves. They hold events at Super Speedways, outdoor stadiums, and even fairgrounds! Most first time visitors are overwhelmed at the massive size and offerings of it all as it’s a lot like taking a trip to Disney World the first time around!

A few years back GoodGuys and RideTech teamed up to create a new autocross event to be held at most GoodGuys shows. It quickly became a fan favorite and gave people the chance to do something at a car show that they had never really been able to do before; drive their car! Anyone that would like to run their car may enter and there is no additional cost to do so beyond the ticket to enter the car show itself. A safety inspection is done of each car before it’s allowed to compete, and then each person is allowed to rip it up on the track all day long. Each run is timed electronically and at the end of the show awards are presented to the winner of each of the classes. Since the Pro-Touring hobby has skyrocketed in the past few years these events have really become a place for vendors and racers a like to strut their stuff.

On a personal note, I attend the Good Guys show over the 4th of July every year now with my wife, kids, Chevelle, brother and sister in laws, and the list goes on an on. We make an entire weekend of it and camp there, taking in the sights, cars, and massive fireworks show. I can’t think of anything more patriotic than 3 days of American hot rods and muscle cars except maybe a fly-by by a tight 4-ship formation of F-18’s! The Des Moines show was where I received my first taste of autocrossing and Ive been ruined ever since. Stay tuned for more information on that in the future!

If you’ve never been to a Good Guys show you’re missing out on something special. Be sure to check out their schedule and find a show close to you, just to see it once. I guarantee you’ll love it.

  1. I have two Camaro’s I’m currently working on a 73 Z28 that my dad and I are restoring. Also, I have a 92 Camaro drag car. If I won this giftcard I would put it to the cost of a TCI Outlaw shifter for my race car! I will soon need a new transmission as well so I may need to use it on a TCI converter instead. =)
