Explosives in the General Lee = Bad News for Humanity

Dukes Review – S4E12: “Goodbye General Lee”

This is the episode you’ve been waiting for depending upon how much you love the General Lee…or how much you love illegal acts of hypnosis. This is the classic tale of how Boss Hogg had Luke hypnotized into getting rid of the General Lee so that Boss could KILL the car and be fat, rich, and happy the rest of his days. The General was sold to a drunken used car dealer, then nearly pushed off a cliff AND blown up, both of which were thwarted by an (almost divinely inspired) act of good timing and dose of mass bravery by people that loved the General more than life itself. Wrongs were righted though, and then the Dukes jumped the General Lee over Rosco and saved Luke’s soul in the process. Hell yes. 10-Corndogs!

Legit Episode Info:

Season 4 – Episode 11 “Trouble at Cooter’s”
Written by Bruce Howard
Directed by Don McDougall
Original Airdate: 11/27/1981

Corndog’s Insider Dukes of Hazzard Episode Specific Nerd Trivia:

As we’ve mentioned in previous episodes… “Goodbye General Lee” is the first time we get to see an all-new look for the General Lee. It has always been believed that this is when Warner Brothers started building the cars “in house”. Without knowing an exact date (or season) when the Veluzats stopped building the cars… or Fritz’s timeline, it’s kind of hard to say for sure.

The obvious changes that were done to the car is a wider pushbar and the lighter tan interior… which was almost white. The rollbars and padding were left black for a nice contrast against the tan interior. The radio antenna hole, side marker light holes, and the back up lights were all smoothed over. All of the cars received vinyl top trim and no wheel opening trim. The cars still used the 21-908a Radio Shack teardrop antenna on the leading edge of the car. Later on, the teardrop antenna would be mounted about 6in away for the edge… and then the teardrop would go away in favor of the square-base Avanti antenna.

During this episode, they mostly used ’68 Chargers and you will occasionally see a ’69 model here and there. One thing that I noticed about Cooter’s tow truck… when it was seen on location (Lake Sherwood, Indian Dunes) it was a 67-72 bump-side Ford. When they needed a tow truck at the Burbank backlot or on a sound stage, it was a 69-72 Chevy/GMC.

– 5:13 – After Bo and Luke jump the General Lee early in the episode, they get out and pop the hood. At a quick glance, this looks like one of the close-up cars… but it isn’t. The engine bay on this small block ’68 is pretty clean with a fresh coat of black spray paint, chrome air cleaner, and yellow plug wires.

– 16:09 – When Cooter tows the General back to the Duke farm, and is unloading it, if you look carefully you can see a little red label in the lower corner (driver side) of the windshield.

– 21:20 – When Bo and Luke go to Hobie’s car lot, they trade the General Lee in on a yellow 1973 Plymouth Satellite. After purchasing the car, when they are driving back to the farm, they show an interior shot through the windshield… except it isn’t the same car. They showed footage from inside a General Lee with a tan dash.

– 26:00 – On Boss Hogg’s racing coveralls, you will see many knock-off sponsor patches all over. On his left sleeve, he has a patch for Kibbe’s favorite tire… the Manhandler… except, this patch says “Hogghandler”. Other sponsors include Hogg Alarm Systems, J.D.’s GT Mirrors, J.D. Shocks, Hogg Tread Radials, Hogg O Charge Kit, Hogg Mag Wheels, BosSeats, Hazzard Headers, Detachable Hoggtops,

– 27:00 – When Rosco tries to send the General Lee off the cliff, this was at Indian Dunes… the same place that Daisy’s Plymouth went off the cliff along with many other cars throughout the series. This is also the same place Gary Baxley made the huge jump in the General Lee over “Styxx River” (Santa Clarita River).

– 39:45 – After leaving Hobie’s, when Bo jumps the Plymouth, stuntman John Cade was actually behind the wheel of this car.

Patrick Wright played the role of “Spanner”… one of the bad guys. You may remember him from way back in season one, in “Luke’s Love Story”, where he played the roll of Moss.

All in all… this was a very good episode in my opinion. We get to see a fresh look on the General, many good driving scenes, and a good storyline. I give it a solid 9

Dream Board Update: Goals to Accomplish Before Episode 200

rob_ferrari_dietcokesponsorship

Coca Cola Corporation take note. This is how awesome sponsoring our show would be. Even when driving Ferrari F-430 race prepped track cars Kibbe can only think about how refreshing a Diet Coke would be.

1. Get Diet Coke to Sponsor us….or just Kibbe. FAILED

2. Be characters in the Disney/Pixar movie, Cars 3. Finnegan is the General. Kibbe…is wishing he was the General. FAILED.

3. Syndicate the show onto TV and radio, having awesome guests in studio, with Dale Earnhardt Jr. on regularly to be our best friend.

4. Get John Schneider himself on the show with us. Pray to God he actually likes us and isn’t freaked out. FAILED

5. Blow up the podcast so that it becomes a regular weekly show, interviewing celebrities, and actually providing a living for us capable of allowing us to race cars anytime we want plus let our wives get the shoes they like.

6. Get our own studio.

7. We each get a General Lee (real car – not a toy). Kibbe has one!

8. Get a Voiceover Guy to announce the segments.

9. Jump a car together. Kibbe wants to go 30-feet vertical.

10. Make a Dream GL that is based off of a 1973 NASCAR Charger (like the 1/16th scale AMT model)

11. Kibbe needs a new wallet to replace his “George Costanza”.

12. Mike to get a new truck for legit towing. DONE!
