Dukes of Hazzard S3E1: Carnival of Thrills Parts 1

K&F Show Summary:

This is Part 1 of Carnival of Thrills, the biggest, scariest, most Bo vs. Luke fighting-est Dukes episode ever! Seriously, this episode is the one where an evil she-devil stunt show owner named Diane pits Bo vs. Luke, and Bo chooses her and jumping the General Lee over 32 cars over the family. The problem is…the she-devil is being outfoxed by the the first guy she snuggled up to to do the jump and he’ll make sure that Bo and the General both fail in a miserable ball of 4th of July fireworks (i.e. he’ll kill them). The episode ends with Luke calling Bo out, and the first haymaker is thrown. Oh, and the General is nearly killed. And Boss is up to something terrible. That too. Hijinks ensue.

Legit Show Info:

Season 3 – Episode 1 “Carnival of Thrills – Pt 1”
Airdate: 9/16/80
Written by William Raynor and Myles Wilder
Directed by Dick Moder

Interesting Tidbits:

This is the big one. The first time that we see Bo and Luke fight.

-I remember this one as a kid. I could not believe it. I think I cried when the General was on the forklift headed for the crusher. I semi teared up this time.

-This the first time that the General is the hostage in the situation – or the character that needs to be protected!

-Just like Marty McFly, Bo doesn’t like to be called a chicken.

-The seeds of the future NASCAR circuit for Bo and Luke are planted in this episode….

-Diane was played by Robin Mattson – a daytime soao opera star. In 1997, she wrote her own cookbook: Soap Opera Cafe: the Skinny on Food From a Daytime Star. She dedicated it to the person who helped her realize she had a passion for cooking, her father, Paul Mattson.

-Bob Dexter was played by Richard Jensen – a stunt man on this show, but an actor before it and is the guy that introduced John Schneider to his first agent in Atlanta. He’s also the one that said Schneider liked to act with tight jeans and sans undies.

-Carl was played by Don Stroud, who I think is the one that the stunt guy said was trying to sell cocaine to everyone on set. Grew up in Hawaii and at the age of 17, he placed fourth in the “Duke Kahanamoku World Surfing Championship” at Makaha, Hawaii. Also Survived a plane crash during the making of Von Richthofen and Brown (1971) and saved the pilot’s life by treading water for 45 minutes. He was paid $10,000 to appear as the nude centerfold in the November, 1973 issue of Playgirl Magazine. In the early 1990s Stroud attempted to come to the aid of a man being mugged on the street in Greenwich Village, New York City. He wound up getting stabbed ten times, including his right eye; he can no longer see out of it. Most famous for Brother of Duke Stroud, the angry flight control officer in Top Gun that kept having coffee spilled all over him.

Corndog’s Super Insider Analysis:

A scene from the Carnival of Thrills episode. Note the larger 15x8.5 "Vector" wheels that the General Lee is wearing in this episode - a rare sight!

A scene from the Carnival of Thrills episode. Note the larger 15×8.5 “Vector” wheels that the General Lee is wearing in this episode – a rare sight!

3:13 – When the General Lee rolls into the Cedar City Fairgrounds, this is the freshly painted ’69 RT/SE that we’ve seen over the last few episodes with painted rocker moldings. Notice the wider 15×8.5 Vector wheels on this car (see above picture). This is one of the few times that you will see a General Lee with the wide 8.5 in wheels. You will also see orange overspray on the top of the tail pipes. For this scene, the “Fairgrounds” was actually the backlot at WB… notice that there is a building from the Hazzard Square in the background. The majority of the rest of the episode was filmed at Saugus Speedway in Saugus, CA.

6:37 – When a shirtless Luke Dukes of unloading fence posts from the truck of the General, notice that this is a ’69 model car with painted-over vinyl top trim, back up lights, and wheel opening trim. On the underside of the trunk lid, they even painted over the paper jack instructions

16:00-22:00 – When Bo and Luke compete against the other local drivers, there were two cars used. The car that was mostly used inside the track was Mike’s favorite, the “4×4” GL, with the hogged out wheel openings. This car was also often seen with only a driver side windshield wiper arm. The other ’69 Charger that was used mostly in the parking lot of the racetrack… we have already seen this car many times as well. It has painted over vinyl top trim and a very distinct dent in the top edge of the driver side fender… and a dent on the lower pass. side quarter panel.

28:18 – When Bo goes into the RV and Diane is just getting out of the shower… she tells him to open the champagne. She goes to the back of the RV to get dressed. Either she’s very fast or it just takes him forever to figure out how to open the bottle… because by the time Bo pops the top off the bottle, she is completely fixed up… from head to toe.

31:07 – Cooter and Luke tune up the General Lee. Notice the engine bay is still the original F3 Light Metallic Green. This car has seen some serious action just by the looks of the crumpled front valance panel. Also notice the center I-piece in the grille has seen better days. The small pushbars were notorious for wiping out the center section of the grille every time it was bumped…. which is one of the main reasons they went to the larger pushbars in later episodes. The small pushbar was only mounted to the bumper whereas the larger (wider) pushbars were not only attached to the bumper, it was also attached to both frame rails.

36:29-36:51 – When Bo makes his first test jump, he starts off in a 1972 Plymouth Satellite Sedan. As he approaches the ramp and jumps… the car changes to a 1972 Plymouth Fury Sedan. The car that lands is a 1973 Ford Torino Sedan. As he pulls back up, he is back in the 1972 Satellite Sedan

Dream Board Update: Goals to Accomplish Before Episode 200

rob_ferrari_dietcokesponsorship

Coca Cola Corporation take note. This is how awesome sponsoring our show would be. Even when driving Ferrari F-430 race prepped track cars Kibbe can only think about how refreshing a Diet Coke would be.

1. Get Diet Coke to Sponsor us….or just Kibbe.

2. Be characters in the Disney/Pixar movie, Cars 3. Finnegan is the General. Kibbe…is wishing he was the General.

3. Syndicate the show onto TV and radio, having awesome guests in studio, with Dale Earnhardt Jr. on regularly to be our best friend.

4. Get John Schneider himself on the show with us. Pray to God he actually likes us and isn’t freaked out.

5. Blow up the podcast so that it becomes a regular weekly show, interviewing celebrities, and actually providing a living for us capable of allowing us to race cars anytime we want plus let our wives get the shoes they like.

6. Get our own studio.

7. We each get a General Lee (real car – not a toy).

8. Get a Voiceover Guy to announce the segments.

9. Jump a car together. Kibbe wants to go 30-feet vertical.

10. Make a Dream GL that is based off of a 1973 NASCAR Charger (like the 1/16th scale AMT model)

11. Kibbe needs a new wallet to replace his “George Costanza”.

12. Mike to get a new truck for legit towing. DONE!
