With today's focus on bling wing and other tacked-on stuff that doesn't make a car go faster it's hard to remember that cars like this weaponized 1986 Ford Mustang coupe were once the most feared machines on the road. That low-key look hides some serious blasting powder under the hood including a Vortech supercharger making this the automotive version of walk softly and carry a big stick. For a lot of Mustang guys the 5.0 notchback coupes were pure hardcore mayhem. No frills just the lightest possible curb weight and the strongest body to handle some pretty gnarly power. The '86 models have an almost austere look and in basic black it looks like it sprang from the same kind of insane minds that gave the FBI turbocharged Buick Regals. The finish is actually quite good shiny enough to let everyone know this car has been well-maintained but not so shiny that potential victims spot the high-dollar paint and figure that an even bigger sum was spent on the hardware underneath. No this car definitely nails the look. There's not much chrome on these save for a little trim around the windows but that's how the factory did it and there's not much sense in trying to change it. The urethane bumpers are in excellent condition and now that the 5.0 has made a big comeback those badges on the fenders will once again strike fear into street racers' hearts. You bought an LX coupe without caring about what they put inside. The GT got supportive buckets but the LX got the same plain chairs that came in 4-cylinder Mustangs and that's perfectly OK with me. To be honest the upholstery in this car is shockingly nice showing minimal wear and factory-correct details throughout. Door panels carpets and even the dash are in excellent shape and this stripped down street fighter doesn't even get a center console. It does however offer factory A/C a full array of instruments to properly monitor the 5.0 and they just couldn't resist a set of lightweight aluminum pedals to dress things up just a little bit. A custom short-shift shifter lives under the stock leather boot and there's an upgraded stereo in the original slot but otherwise this no-nonsense pony remains single-mindedly focused on one thing: speed. Given the car's featherweight curb weight speed is easy thanks to a 1994 fuel injected 5.0 augmented with some pretty big deal parts. The biggest upgrade is obviously the Vortec supercharger which pumps 6 pounds of boost into the stout 5.0. Trick Flow supplied both the oversized intake and a set of aluminum heads so curb weight was chopped some more and horsepower went way up. 40 lb-hr injectors were fitted to keep the pressurized cylinders from going lean and an upgraded cam cackles a bit at idle so nobody's going to think it's stock. An X-pipe with Flowmasters gives it a nasty engine note but lest you think this is just a straight-line car note the giant sway bars and upgraded springs underneath making this a tidy little handler too. 4-wheel disc brakes solve the Mustang's lone Achilles' heel and it's fitted with fat BFGoodrich G-Force T/A radials on blacked-out wheels for a truly sinister look. There's no way you could find a clean 5.0 coupe this nice and stuff it full of this much performance for anywhere near the asking price.
