Description

<

The 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 was described by Ford as "a car bred in open competition and built for total performance." For 1964 there were 16 different models to choose from including sedans hardtops convertibles and wagons. The Galaxie carried much the same lines as the all-new 1963½ models with new trim moldings grill and rear panel design and all-new interior trim styling.

This beautiful Rangoon Red ’64 Galaxie 500 hardtop was built as a tribute to the early-‘60s Galaxies that dominated tracks around the country. At the dawn of the muscle car era Galaxies similar to this one were take-no-prisoners machines designed with both luxury and performance in mind. There were lightweight factory cars with fiberglass front ends that terrorized drag racers and a sloping fastback coupe roofline that put Ford in the NASCAR winner’s circle more often than not. The lightweight full-size Fords were not continued for the 1964 model year as the factory dragster programs switched to the lightweight Ford Fairlane series with a little something called Thunderbolt. However many lightweight parts continued to be offered through dealerships for Galaxie models and Ford continued to win at the race track on a regular basis.

Under the Thunderbolt-style hood on this Galaxie is a thundering 1968-vintage 427 side-oiler with dual quads up top and yes it is a real side-oiler (it has the oil galley boss on the driver’s side cross-bolted mains and screw-in freeze plugs). From the factory engines just like this were rated at 425 horsepower but there’s almost universal agreement that they were thumping out considerably more than that. If you’ve never heard one of these massive Fords at full throttle you’re in for a treat with this car. It exhales through long-tube headers into a 3-inch dual exhaust system with Flowmaster mufflers and turn-downs just ahead of the rear axle. Backing this car out of the trailer felt like letting an animal out of a cage. A really big animal.

The engine is backed by a built Ford C6 automatic with a 3500 RPM stall speed torque converter for decent street manners. Shifts are crisp and fast and you don’t have to worry about durability with this package. Out back there’s an indestructible 9-inch on original leaf springs with traction bars. The shop I used to work at had one of those original lightweight ’63 Galaxies—The Procrastinator—and it was still owned by its original owner and was in original race condition. That car held a lot of national records for a lot of years using a combination similar to the one in this car. That car could launch at 6000 RPM all day without breaking which it testament to the durability of the components in these cars. It’s awfully hard to beat a car that can launch at 6000 RPM I don’t care what you’re driving.

But this Galaxie isn’t just a crude racer. The Galaxie was also Ford’s top-of-the-line luxury car and it shows in the detailing throughout the vehicle. The car has clearly been professionally restored and the paint quality is excellent. The Rangoon Red paint (this is the car’s original color by the way) is deep and lustrous and all the chrome and stainless has been professionally restored. The big Galaxies were highly detailed and the sleek styling emphasized the era’s fascination with jet engines in the design of the taillights. 15-inch charcoal-colored American Racing Torque-Thrust replicas carry modern radials 235/75/15s up front and 255/70/15s out back.

Inside the black vinyl interior is likewise restored and in excellent condition. Everything is new from the seats to the headliner and the dashboard is a great example of early ‘60s design with a brushed-aluminum speedometer face. The climate controls radio and clock are original with a modern CD stereo system hidden in the glove box. Under the dash are a pair of Summit Racing mechanical oil pressure and water temperature gauges along with a big racing tachometer with a shift light. The transmission tunnel is topped by a B&M ratcheting automatic shifter.

This car is a great combination of elements—it’s beautiful to look at carries some decent history has been completely restored and sorted and there’s a ton of performance inside. The fact that it is a clone makes it 100% drivable and enjoyable and the engine itself is probably worth a small fortune. It’s almost like you’re buying the engine and getting the rest of the car for free. Of course once you feel the power you’ll never want to give it up and that’s exactly why cars like this Galaxie are so special. Call us today and find out why Ford was the only place to buy performance in the early ‘60s.
