Description
For those who fully believe performance died in 1971 we have a freshly restored bright orange asterisk for you. Buick’s Stage 1 cars were strong enough to win Motor Trend’s top performer award in ’72 running mid 14′s at better than 100mph—no small feat on an emissions legal motor! Couple that screaming performance with a gorgeous convertible body in an unreal color scheme make it a loaded-to-the-gills car toss in an $90000+ restoration and make sure it’s documented—this is a keeper for sure!
Sitting here is the rarest of the rare—a Stage 1 convertible. How rare? How about this car being one of only 66 automatics and 81 overall built in ’72? That’s rare!
The Alfred P. Sloan museum has the build records on some of the hottest cars built during the muscle car era such as this one. The list of options is incredible—here’s the way the factory built this amazing vehicle:
34 67 GS455 Convertible
ZZ Flame Orange
1 White convertible top
245 White notchback bench seat interior
B2 Turbo Hydramatic 400 transmission
CF Power disc brakes and variable ratio power steering
DN AM Sonoramic radio rear speaker and stereo tape deck
E6 Through bumper exhaust extensions
F7 G60-15 Firestone Wide Oval white letter tires and chrome plated wheels
G1 Performance axle with positive traction (std. Stage 1)
I6 Air conditioning
J1 Custom seat belts
L2 Soft-Ray tinted windshield
NF Front and rear bumper guards and bumper strips front and rear
O6 Sport outside rear view mirrors
S7 Tilt steering
UD Full rallye gauge package with tachometer and Convenience Group (Trunk light mirror map light)
V2 Chrome plated wheels (std with F9 Wide Ovals)
X2 Rallye steering wheel
In case you’re not the adding machine type that’s over two grand worth of options on a $3400 car! Total price at the bottom of the sticker was $5556.67 delivered to Samson Buick Co. in Pittsburgh PA—that’s a lot of equipment but this is a Buick after all!
Pop the hood and check out the mechanical credentials. The "WS" stamp on the rear pad designates it as a ’72 Stage 1 piece although the original block was replaced under warranty. The transmission has the original VIN stamped clearly and crisply on the driver’s side while the Stage 1-specific code BB tag is riveted to the passenger side. Visually the engine compartment is concours correct with the proper paints finishes markings and tags where they should be and the car looks the part of a concours restored show piece. The carburetor is a ’72 GS455 piece that’s been fully restored and it operates as it should with the fully rebuilt engine. A new battery reproduction wires and hoses and a fresh tune up mean you won’t have to worry about a thing for the upcoming show season!
The fully restored interior looks better than new. The dash pad is straight and soft the gauges are freshly restored all switchgear operates as designed and the power top functions efficiently. The A/C blows ice cold and new upholstery from the carpet up is in place and in perfect condition. The seats are freshly stuffed and very comfortable—this is a real road trip car—if you dare to drive it!
Detailed with the proper tags paint markings and correct equipment the undercarriage is a reference piece for restorers. New steering and suspension components bolt to the correctly finished frame. The floor pans were painted in one piece just as they should and in the correct sheen. New brake components from rotors and drums to hardware lines and hoses are in place. Again the restoration was a thorough one!
Flawless two stage paint covers the body. Flame Orange certainly isn’t the first color that comes to mind for a Buick but on a hot car like this it’s a winner and Then & Now Automotive in Marietta GA did a fantastic job. Chrome bumpers and trim are re-chromed original pieces. Lights and lenses from the T3 bulbs to the taillights are fresh and new. Stainless trim pieces shine thanks to their careful polishing. All of the glass is new. The re-chromed 15” Rallye wheels with G60-15 Polyglas tires anchor the car and are the best look on a muscle Buick.
Dropping their ridiculous 400ci limit for intermediates in 1970 GM created some of the most powerful muscle cars of all time. Big block convertibles have always been blue chip investments especially in such a striking color combination the top shelf engine and a pile of options. Add in the legendary Buick GS 455 Stage 1 package and you have one for the ages!
