Why do we have a picture of Dan Kahn's Boss 302 in a show post about listener e-mails? Because it's cool....and because we couldn't find a picture of a cool mail truck.

Welcome to the Cars For A Living! This show is dedicated specifically to help out those that would love to find a way to turn their automotive passions into a career, business, or life long journey.

In this episode my co-host Dan Kahn and I took on a grab bag of listener e-mail questions. Some were specific to software, while others had to do with finding the USP (Unique Selling Pproposition) of being an automotive photographer for a living. Each was a unique example of the many different business and career options that are available.

Here are the questions that we took on (in no particular order)!

1) In a recent cars for a living podcast you mentioned that you had to “pay for software”. I am curious on what software you are buying and if you have looked into Open Source programs that do the same thing? For basic office work, the LibreOffice Suite does everything MS Office does and is compatible with MS office files. Other things like Graphics (GIMP, Inkscape) Audio (Audacity), Internet (Chromium), and anything you can think of is out there and is free to download and use.

2) Currently I am a sophomore in college taking up a business degree, and a recent transfer from the engineering major. I really went in to school hoping to open my own shop one day, and thought that engineering would be the best way to start out. However, the calculus side of engineering was a major roadblock so I switched to the business sides of things. I have always loved cars and in high school, I earned a certificate in collision repair. I just do not know what God is calling me to; I just hope it has something to do with cars.

3) I’m into performance and trying to figure where my personality best matches which avenue of the auto business to pursue. If you could elaborate on the evaluation you had and how it benefited you, that would work for me.

Here’s a quick reference that we mentioned in the show for this one – it’s the DISC Personality Test available at 48days.com.

4) I’m struggling taking my photography/video career from hobby status to viable full time employment. I travel most weekends to car shows across the Midwest covering the events for my own site & recently for a couple of magazines. The magazine work is finally showing some income, but not nearly enough to leave the income of my 53 hr/wk J.O.B.

Here’s a quick reference that we mentioned in the show for this one – it’s the McClanahan’s Photography Studio in Ames, IA.

The day job is slowly killing me, it used to be that every day was a nice smooth ripple of a 4 to 6 on a scale of 1-10. Lately the weekends have been 10’s making the 5 days in between emotionally and physically draining even though it’s a desk job.

5) I am 53 years old, last year the cabinet company I worked for closed and I started my own repair business in the cabinet field. I have worked in the automotive field in the past. I have always bought and sold cars when I could afford to do so. When money got tight I sold my 74 ‘Cuda project car with all the body work and paint done and a lot of parts bought for $10,000, paid off some bills with half of it and bought a 72 Chevelle with the other half. After driving it for a year and doing very little to it I sold it for $10,500 ,and paid off some more bills and bought another car. I I love fixing up cars as I enjoy driving them, but finding the great deal in the first place is what starts it all for me. I look forward to seeing what words of wisdom you might have to offer.

We’d love to get your feedback on how how you deal with these issues as well as what you’d like us to concentrate on for the next show. Feel free to simply reply in the post notes below, hit us up on Facebook or Twitter, or shot us an e-mail!
