FEATURE INTERVIEW

This weeks guest is Gary Keyes, a man that built what may just be the ultimate ’68 Dana 427 Camaro replica. Gary told the story of falling in love with cars as a kid courtesy an introduction from his older sister’s boyfriend, and he’s been a car guy ever since. When he started his Camaro restoration it was not his initial intention to build a Dana replica, especially since it was one of the rarest of the Dealer created “Super Camaros” and would require a ton of effort. However, one thing led to another, and today he now owns – AND DRIVES – a Dana replica that might just be better than the “real” thing! As a side effect of his work on the car he’s become one of the leading experts on Dana Camaro’s, and may just have to write a few books on how it’s done!

Gary sent me the following details on the car, and I’ll just share it as he wrote it – it’s pure joy for any gearhead.  Thanks for the interview, Gary!

68 427 Dana Camaro, SS/RS, correct over the counter 68 L71 tri power, solid lifter, 11 to 1 compression, 4 bolt main, NOS L88 cam 427 Corvette engine. Dynoed at 500 HP. Vintage TI ignition, M22 4 speed, vintage NOS Hurst shifter, bolt on sub frame connectors, Traction Master bars, vintage Lakewood scatter shield, vintage NOS MT cheater slicks (display only), Custom Hurst cheater slicks (road use), vintage Doug’s headers and custom cut outs, 12 bolt 410 posi, 13/16 HD front sway bar, 4 core HD radiator, quick steering ratio, Power disc brakes, Matador Red, special RS trim package, blacked out tail panel, black deluxe hounds tooth interior, vintage wood sport steering wheel, vintage Sun SST 802 8K tachometer, no console, radio delete, vintage 2 5/8 Stewart Warner big black face gauges with vintage Stewart Warner gauge panel, Tinted glass, custom Dana Hood, Dana emblems, Hurst emblem, 2 ½ inch exhaust with Cherry Bombs, 6 x 15 inch steel wheels with poverty hub caps. This car represents a Stage II car with tri power. Estimated cost of the conversion in 68 would have been $6,100.00 including the cost of the car. Approximately $3,000, which would have bee the cost of the conversion.

LISTENER MAIL

This week I addressed e-mail from several listeners, but one in particular from listener Ben Sharpe. Ben enjoys the show but wanted to write to let me know this things about it that were annoying him……and guess what?  For the most part, I agreed with him!  The biggest issue Ben had with the show was the long repetitive introduction I used to give, and (thanks to a spur from Ben) no longer do. I explained my reasoning for that was to give an aid to new listeners (as well as to deter the people that steal every article and podcast post I put out), but with the new format of the show I think it works better.

Let me know what you think – and Ben, thanks for caring enough to tell me!
